A handful of applications might need minor tweaks to work properly with DaDesktop

Troubles with Fresh Start cloning and how to fix them

Most apps run perfectly fine after being set up on the Fresh Start machine with DaDesktop (DD). But a couple of them don't behave as expected because of the cloning process, and they require a few extra steps to get back to normal.

• Oracle Database Server - You'll need to update the hostname from the duplicate to 127.0.0.1
• Hyper-V server - If you clone from the FreshStart machine with the External switch enabled, duplicate MAC addresses cause trouble
• Google Chrome - Chrome might fail to start on cloned machines if the Fresh Start machine wasn't fully shut down during cloning, due to a linked profile
• WSL - Windows System for Linux - Our testing shows that DaDesktop machines with WSL installed aren't portable; moving a DaDesktop machine that has WSL to another DD server will result in boot failure. The exact reason isn't clear, but it's likely that Windows makes hardware-specific assumptions, and shifting servers causes the problem. Since WSL is rarely used in training (usually Linux is used directly), we haven't fully investigated this yet
• Issues where a trial software licence uses the MAC address to track the licence - In this case, the licence was tied to a MAC address, and after cloning, it appeared the licence was already activated and used up.
• Applications that require licences may need to be added after FreshStart has been cloned.
   

Other problems you might face while using DaDesktop

• Very slow VirtualBox when Hyper-V and VirtualBox are both in use (This happens outside DaDesktop too.)

  Problem: VirtualBox runs extremely slowly on Windows machines, making it nearly impossible to deliver a course, but the fix is quite simple:-
  Solution 1: Uninstall Hyper-V Virtualisation from Windows:

  Solution 2: Apply the Hyper-V Server workaround mentioned earlier; otherwise duplicate MAC addresses lead to slow machine usage, boot problems, and other odd behaviour.

• Unable to type certain characters like Apostrophes / Quotation Marks, Inverted Commas, into a DaDesktop machine.
